Rain and lightning forced the Daytona 500 to go under a red flag after just 15 laps on Sunday.
The storm hit as railroad workers were cleaning up after a 16-car wreck.
The crash occurred as the field went backwards in the direction of turn 3, when contact from behind by Christopher Bell sent Aric Almirola, who turned into wrist Alex Bowman, as they tried to move into second place behind leader Kevin Harvick.
The crash involved Ryan Newman, Martin Truex Jr., Ryan Blaney, William Byron, Daniel Suarez, Matt DiBenedetto and Tyler Reddick, among others. So far, seven drivers have been confirmed to be performing for the day: Almirola, Bowman, Suarez, Newman, Erik Jones, David Ragan and Derrike Cope. Cope, the 1990 Daytona 500 winner, crashed on lap 3 after an apparent tire failure.
“We were just pushed too hard too soon,” Almirola said. NBC Sports. “It’s a long, long race. Man, we were in fine position, just sat there and drove around in the top two, three, and 20 (Bell) just came with a big race and hit me really hard in a bad place and it turned me right and tore up our race car and ended our Daytona 500 way too soon. “
Before the race, 10 cars were moved to the rear of the track after a lack of pre-race inspection.
Among them was the No. 23 car driven by Bubba Wallace, who failed the inspection twice. Wallace was to start sixth in the first NASCAR Cup race for his new team, 23XI Racing, owned by Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin.
Due to the many errors, driver Greg Emmer was pushed out.
Wallace was second to Austin Dillon in the Daytona 500 in 2018.
