European markets are pushing higher as hopes for recovery lift global equities

LONDON – European markets opened modestly higher on Tuesday as hopes for an impending economic recovery backed by persistently low interest rates continue to drive risk-on trading.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 rose 0.3% in early trading, with oil and gas stocks rising 1.4% to post gains, while the media sector fell 0.3% lower.

European equities received one strong transfer from Asia-Pacific, where markets largely advanced during Tuesday’s trading, led by equities in Hong Kong and Japan.

Stateside, futures tied to the major indices indicates robust gains on Wall Street at Tuesday’s opening as trading starts after Monday’s Presidential Day.
