John Oliver returned from break on Sunday for the one topic he admits “no one wants to hear” about and that is the pandemic.
But instead of focusing on the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the host of HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” looked forward to the next big outbreak and where it could start.
“Researchers tried to warn us of ‘the next pandemic’ long before the current one hit,” he notes. “And we did not really listen.”
Oliver said the failure led to the day’s serious situation – yet there is every indication that it could happen again, right down to the lack of preparing for a pandemic in advance.
“Unfortunately, there is every chance that when all this is over, we will end up treating the coronavirus as a really bad rush at Thanksgiving,” he noted. “That is, waiting patiently for it to disappear so we can never talk about it again and collectively pretending that it did not just kill Grandma.”
Now, he said, there are already warning signs about where the pandemics of the future may begin, including exotic pets, factory farms … and people kissing pigs.
