Power companies warn Iowans of possible rolling outages

Keeping warm is becoming a problem as dangerously cold temperatures sweep across the country, including Iowa. Some energy companies are implementing rolling out power outages to keep pace with the demand for electricity. These companies that call for rollout are part of what is called the “Southwest Power Pool,” a group of utilities in 14 states, including Iowa. Much of western Iowa is serviced by the Southwest Power Pool. The Humboldt-based Corn Belt Power Cooperative is one of them. Corn Belt tells customers that there may be periodic power outages lasting 45 minutes. MidAmerican Energy asks customers to save on natural gas. The supply is damaged due to frozen gas wells. MidAmerican hopes that the situation will resolve as the temperature rises in the coming days. MidAmerican says no problems are expected for electrical customers. Alliant Energy says it has adequate supplies for customers with electric and natural gas, but natural gas customers who signed up for the “interrupt plan” may have their service interrupted, but Alliant says they will receive a warning first.
