The North Carolina Republican Party voted unanimously Monday to censor Senator Richard M. Burr for voting to convict former President Donald J. Trump in his second indictment.
The reprimand was the last fallout for the seven Republicans who sided with the Democrats in a failed attempt to find Mr. Trump guilty of inciting an uprising on January 6 when a crowd of Trump supporters ravaged through the Capitol.
The vote of Mr. Burr, 65, who is retiring after three terms in the Senate, came as a surprise after previously voting against proceeding with the prosecution process due to a Republican challenge that the Senate lacked jurisdiction to try a former president .
The Republican Party of North Carolina said in a announcement Monday that the decision to censor Burr was made by its central committee.
The party “agrees with the strong majority of Republicans in both the US House of Representatives and the Senate that the Democratic-led attempt to accuse a former president is outside the US Constitution,” the statement said.
Mr. Burr issued a brief statement in response, saying it was a “really sad day” for Republicans in his state.
“My party leadership has chosen loyalty to a man over the fundamental principles of the Republican Party and the founders of our great nation,” he said.
Mr. Trump was acquitted Saturday by a vote of 57 guilty to 43 not guilty, who signed the two-thirds threshold of conviction. The result was not a surprise because only six Republicans had joined the Democrats clear the way for the case to be heard by narrowly rejecting a constitutional objection.
Of seven Republican senators who voted in favor catch, Mr. Burr is not the only one facing reprimand. The Republican Party of Louisiana, for example, said after the prosecution that it was “deeply disappointed“In the case of a guilty vote by the senator of his home state, Bill Cassidy.
Of the seven, only Mr. Burr and Senator Patrick J. Toomey of Pennsylvania, who are also retiring, are not facing voters again. Mr. Toomey was reprimanded of several Republican officials at the county level in his state in recent days.
None of the senators expressed particular criticism of Mr. Trump while in office.
In 2019, Mr. Burr, then chairman of the Intelligence Committee, rejected testimony from Donald Trump Jr. as part of his work to lead the only bipartisan congressional inquiry into Russian electoral interference. The former president’s son responded to start a political war mod Mr. Burr, who puts him and the Intelligence Committee on their heels.
On the day of the vote in the prosecution, Burr laid down his justification for his guilty verdict by saying that the president “bears responsibility” for the events of January 6th.
“The evidence is convincing that President Trump is guilty of inciting a revolt against an indifferent branch of government and that the charge is rising to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors,” he said. “That is why I have voted to judge.”
The chairman of the Republican Party of North Carolina, Michael Whatley, published the same day a statement in which he called Mr. Burr’s vote to judge “contradictory”.
“The Republics of North Carolina sent Senator Burr to the U.S. Senate to uphold the Constitution and his vote today to adjudicate in a lawsuit he declared unconstitutional is shocking and disappointing,” he said. Whatley.
Mr. Burr’s prosecution added fuel to speculation that Lara Trump, Sir. Trump’s daughter-in-law, will seek the Senate in North Carolina, as Mr. Burr will leave after the 2022 election. Mrs. Trump, who is married to Eric Trump, grew up in the state and have hovered themselves as a possible Burr successor for several months.
Mrs. Trump, 38, is a former personal trainer and television producer who grew up in Wilmington, NC. A senior Republican official with knowledge of her plans said that while the January 6 uprising had soured Mrs Trump’s desire to seek office, she would decide over the next few months whether to run as part of a coordinated Trump -family comeback.
